Cover Shot: Mist Over the Glass House Mountains
Sunrise over the Glass House Mountains in winter. The fog was thick enough to swallow the valleys whole, just the jagged peaks punching through like islands in a white sea. I was perched up high before first light, waiting for that golden glow to creep in. When it did — soft, pastel, winter light spilling over Mt Beerwah and her neighbours — the whole range looked like it was floating. Cold fingers, warm heart. Always worth the early alarm.
This shot, Pastel Mountain Mist, ended up on the cover of Salt magazine’s Winter 2020 edition. I still reckon it’s one of those mornings the Sunshine Coast really turned it on — still air, crystal-clear views above the fog, and a palette of dusky pinks and golds that felt more like a painting than real life. If you know the hinterland, you’ll know those rare mornings when the valleys hold the mist all the way through sunrise. And if you don’t… well, here’s your postcard.
For anyone chasing a little coastal-hinterland daydream, this scene is as pure Queensland as it gets. The Glass House Mountains standing proud, the fog wrapping them like a winter blanket, the light slow-dancing over it all. A reminder that the Sunshine Coast isn’t just about surf breaks and sandy toes — sometimes the real show is inland, at dawn. Catch ya in the lineup… or maybe up on a ridge for the next one.
